Hawaiian Lomi-Lomi Massage

A Lomi-lomi massage helps to connect all areas of the body to work as one and offers a way for your body to communicate with you by reigniting the life force. Physically it eases muscle pain, increases circulation, helps to draw out toxins and promotes relaxation and well-being. For centuries the ancient art of Hawaiian Lomi-Lomi Massage has been used as a powerful tool for maintaining a healthy way of life. The massage is given in fluid, rhythmic motion using the forearms as well as the hands. Some people have described this as feeling like gentle waves moving over the body.

Another feature is that different parts of the body may be massaged at the same time, for example one arm or hand may be working on a shoulder and another hand may be working on the opposite hip.  This assists the client in totally relaxing as it is impossible or at least extremely difficult for the brain to focus on the two different areas at once.  By not working on areas in isolation a deep sense of balance and harmony is achieved.

Another major difference from other types of massages is that with Lomi Lomi, the client lays directly on the massage table and not on a towel or sheet under them.  There is a top sheet and the clients’ modesty is maintained.  This makes it a lot easier to perform the under body movements and full body strokes without interrupting the flow of the Lomi Lomi massage.  You may be thinking this may get cold for the client, but a heater is used in the room to maintain a warm temperature for the client.  Gentle stretches of the body and gentle rotations of the joints are also a part of the wonderful massage.

Pregnancy or Pre-Natal Massage

The benefits of prenatal massage or massage during pregnancy:

Studies indicate that massage therapy performed during pregnancy can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains, and improve labor outcomes and newborn health.

Massage therapy addresses different needs through varying techniques, one of which is called Swedish Massage, which aims to relax muscle tension and improve lymphatic and blood circulation through mild pressure applied to the muscle groups of the body. Swedish Massage is the recommended prenatal massage method during pregnancy because it addresses many common discomforts associated with the skeletal and circulatory changes brought on by hormone shifts during pregnancy.

Hormone regulation

Studies done in the past 10 years have shown that hormone levels associated with relaxation and stress are significantly altered, leading to mood regulation and improved cardiovascular health, when massage therapy was introduced to women’s prenatal care. In women who received bi-weekly massages for only five weeks, hormones such as norepinephrine and cortisol (“stress hormones”) were reduced and dopamine and serotonin levels were increased (low levels of these hormones are associated with depression). These changes in hormone levels also led to fewer complications during birth and fewer instances of newborn complications, such as low birth weight. The evidence points strongly to maternal and newborn health benefits when therapeutic massage is incorporated into regular prenatal care.

  Reduction of swelling

Edema, or swelling of the joints during pregnancy, is often caused by reduced circulation and increased pressure on the major blood vessels by the heavy uterus. Massage helps to stimulate soft tissues to reduce collection of fluids in swollen joints, which also improves the removal of tissue waste, carried by the body’s lymph system.

Improvement of nerve pain

Sciatic nerve pain is experienced by many women in late pregnancy as the uterus rests on muscles of the pelvic floor and lower back. The pressure of the uterus spreads tension to the muscles of the upper and lower leg, causing them to swell and put pressure on nearby nerves. Massage therapy addresses the inflamed nerves by helping to release the tension on nearby muscles. Many women have experienced significant reduction in sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy through regular massage.

Other potential benefits of prenatal massage:

  • Reduced back pain
  • Reduced joint pain
  • Improved circulation
  • Reduced edema
  • Reduced muscle tension and headaches
  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Improved oxygenation of soft tissues and muscles
  • Better sleep

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue. Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques just like Swedish massage, but the pressure will generally be more intense. It is also a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension or knots (also known as “adhesions.”)

Will A Deep Tissue Massage Hurt?

It shouldn’t hurt, but it’s likely to be a bit more uncomfortable than a classic Swedish massage. You should always feel free to speak up if the pressure is too much for you.

It’s important to drink a lot of water after a deep tissue massage to help flush lactic acid out of the tissues. If you don’t, you might be sore the next day.

It’s possible that you might feel some soreness the day after a deep tissue massage even if you DO drink water. This just means a lot of waste products were flushed out of the tissues. It should pass within a day or so.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage promotes relaxation, eases muscle tension. . It can be slow and gentle or vigorous and bracing, depending on what the therapist wants to achieve.

Feel free to state your preference for pressure during Swedish massage. It can range from light to firm. Swedish massage usually includes some deeper work on areas of specific muscle tension. If you want more intensive work and firmer pressure, please ask for a deep tissue massage.
